Botswana BOCRA to link Type approval to the obligation to service repair

Botswana BOCRA is calling for comments on Draft of Type approval and repair center guidelines. The draft was published on Friday November 6th 2021.

The guidelines which are supposed to be enforced in April 2022 call for the Type approval requestor to ensure that

  • Approved equipments are maintained and repaired in centers accredited by the authority
  • Consumers are provided with aftersales support
  • formal agreements with local and international partners exist
  • a register of repair centers under partnership is maintained
  • dispose off electronic waste

Botswana launches an invitation to bid for IMT Spectrum

Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA/ the Authority) hereby invites companies to submit applications for International Mobile Telecommunications Spectrum (IMT) Licences. This is for the Provision of Mobile Broadband Wireless Access Services in the Spectrum Bands 450 – 470 MHz, 790 – 862 MHz, 2110-2200 MHz, 3400 – 3600 MHz and 2500-2690 for Broadband Wireless Access. The Invitation to Apply (ITA) can be downloaded from BOCRA website www.bocra.org.bw

Botswana BOCRA: Type approval verification Guidelines

A new process adds on to the regular type approval process for SIM enabled devices.

Starting April 2022, BOCRA will provide an online process for registration of SIM enabled devices. The following information shall be captured:

  • Make, Model
  • IMEI
  • Type approval ID

BOCRA is in the process of sensitizing to this new process process. BOCRA conducted a workshop on Nov 9th 2020 leading to the publication on July 7th of the proposed guidelines.

Transition period is not described by the guidelines, so we wait for more to come.

Botswana BOCRA announced change of validity of Type approval certificates

On Sept 24th 2020, BOCRA published on its website a notice to announce the validity of new certificate as permanent. The old validity period was depending on the category of the device and ranging from 1 to 5 years.

The change is effective is effective since July 30th 2020 but only announced officially on Sept 24th

A transition period is expected for existing certificates. Entities in procession of those certificates shall send request of renewal to BOCRA 3 months before their expiry. Renewal certificates will be then issued with no date of expiry

The state of public emergency and lockdown started on Thursday, 2 April.


We confirmed that BOCRA would still be officially operational during this time as employees will be given special permits to allow them to go to work.However, Realtime expects the service to be very limited in BOCRA offices.
